The Premier League is faltering in the Champions League

Of the six English sides, only Arsenal and Liverpool have managed to qualify for the quarter-finals of Europe’s top club competition.

Tuesday was a tough day for the Premier League representatives. Only Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal rose to the occasion, living up to expectations by beating Bayer Leverkusen to stay in the Champions League. Manchester City and Chelsea lost again to Real Madrid and PSG respectively, bidding a bitter farewell to Europe.

Wednesday’s fixtures did not get off to a good start either. In the first match, Newcastle, who had drawn with Barcelona a week ago and had outplayed the Catalan side, suffered a crushing defeat at the Camp Nou after conceding seven goals. The performance in the second half by Eddie Howe’s side was unworthy of an elite team.

In the second fixture, Tottenham played their best game of 2026 to win their match against Atlético Madrid, but it was not enough to overturn the tie. Liverpool also put in a top-class performance, thrashing Galatasaray at Anfield Road to overturn the Turks’ one-goal lead and secure their place in the Champions League quarter-finals.

Champions League Round of 16 results

  • Sporting Portugal 5-0 Bodo Glimt (5-3)
  • Arsenal 2-0 Bayer Leverkusen (3-1)
  • Manchester City 1-2 Real Madrid (1-5)
  • Chelsea 0-3 PSG (2-8)
  • Barcelona 7-2 Newcastle (8-3)
  • Bayern Munich 4-1 Atalanta (10-2)
  • Tottenham 3-2 Atlético Madrid (5-7)
  • Liverpool 4-0 Galatasaray (4-1)

Sporting Lisbon and PSG to face off in the quarter-finals

The Champions League quarter-finals have now been decided. The tie will be played in April, with the first legs on the 7th and 8th and the second legs on the 14th and 15th. The full draw was conducted during the round of 16 draw, meaning both Arsenal and Liverpool know their opponents for the next round of the competition.

Mikel Arteta’s side will face Sporting CP, with the first leg in Lisbon and the second leg at the Emirates Stadium. Liverpool will be looking for revenge against PSG. The first leg will be in the French capital and the second leg at Anfield Road. The other two ties will see Real Madrid take on Bayern Munich and the all-Spanish clash between Barcelona and Atlético Madrid.
