Harry Maguire has started every match since interim manager Michael Carrick took charge in January, underlining his importance to Manchester United with a series of strong displays during the club’s recent resurgence.

The 32-year-old centre-back, who joined from Leicester in 2019, faces an uncertain future at Old Trafford amid reports he would need to accept a pay cut to extend his contract beyond this season.

Despite that uncertainty, Carrick believes the England international still has plenty to contribute.

“Harry’s an impressive character. He’s had a great career so far. Hopefully, there’s a lot more to come,” Carrick said.

“In the journey and experiences he’s had, both here and with England, he’s shown exactly what he is,” he noted.

“We all know the player he is and what he’s capable of. The other night I thought he was fantastic. Experience helps, his attributes help, and his character,” Carrick added.

“His willingness to put himself out there is really impressive at his age. He’s been really important for us,” he stressed.

Maguire’s experience has become even more valuable following Casemiro’s announcement that this will be his final season at the club.

“Experience is massive. It’s hard to put a price on how valuable that can be. Harry has gained an awful lot of experience with this club,” Carrick explained.

“Casemiro leaving is another one and we have to understand what that means,” he warned.

Maguire’s role has also grown in importance with Matthijs de Ligt sidelined by a back injury. The Dutch defender has not featured since late November, and what was initially seen as a minor issue has kept him out for a significant stretch.

While Carrick confirmed that Mason Mount is ‘getting closer’ after returning to training, there is still no clear timeline for De Ligt’s return.

“Matthijs has had a back issue which has been a bit slow to progress. It’s something we’ve been working through. He’s moving in the right direction but is a bit further behind,” Carrick concluded ahead of United’s clash with Crystal Palace on Sunday.
